On November 1-2, 2023, Professor Atsushi Sugiyama (Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Toho University), along with three colleagues—Associate Professor Hiroko Nakaseko, Assistant Professor Ryuichi Kambayashi, and Assistant Professor Ai Goto—actively participated in the “Sino-Japan Symposium: Traditional Chinese Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease” at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Sichuan, China).
Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Toho University established a partnership for collaborative research in 2019. Led by Associate Professor Xin Cao from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Professor Sugiyama from Toho University, the research team actively engages in international joint research endeavors. Dr. Cao, who completed her doctoral degree at Toho University in March 2017, played a pivotal role in fostering research collaboration between the two institutions. She was the first international student with a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship at Toho University, where she excelled in her studies under the guidance of Professor Sugiyama. Since returning to China, Dr. Cao has served as a bridge between Japan and her native country. Recognizing the ongoing research exchange and achievements of researchers from both universities, our group was selected for the Sino-Japanese Science and Technology Exchange Project for Youth Scientist program, which supported this symposium.
In the symposium, researchers shared their findings, with Professor Sugiyama delivering a special lecture on “Efficacy and adverse effects of herbs used in traditional medicine.” Additionally, meetings were held to discuss future collaborative research, accompanied by a campus tour showcasing a unique Chinese traditional medicine laboratory, museum, and medicinal herb garden. The symposium garnered widespread attention within the university, attracting participation from faculty members and students who engaged in lively discussions. A luncheon facilitated exchanges among the dean, vice dean, and secretary of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with professors from the Center for International Exchange, fostering discussions on research and education.
Results and Future Prospects
The symposium reinforced the partnership and furthered international exchange efforts. Professor Sugiyama had the opportunity to lecture at Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine as an invited professor, and students interested in studying at Japanese universities got a chance to participate in web-based reading sessions at Toho University. These developments are expected to strengthen the ongoing collaboration between the two universities, deepen our understanding of traditional Chinese medicine, and foster exchanges among young researchers. We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Xin Cao for organizing this visit and express appreciation to the graduate students of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine who attended to us during the symposium.
