Are the Health Effects of PM_2.5 Derived from Specific Components?

A research group, including Dr. Michikawa of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, Toho University Faculty of Medicine, reported that fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), an air pollutant that has recently been identified as a possible risk factor for diabetes, may also be associated with gestational diabetes. Although there have been international reports of relatively high concentrations of PM_2.5 increasing gestational diabetes, this is the first epidemiological study in the Japanese pregnant women population. This study adds new knowledge on the health effects of PM_2.5in Japan.
The results were published in the JMA Journal, a medical journal published by the Japan Medical Association, on September 26, 2022.
